Welcome to the Remix Project Blog!

A lot of people have been asking, "Where's the Remix website? I need the new information!" Well, sometimes a good thing takes time to get up (just ask Saigon). In the meantime, we've set up this blog to satisfy those of you still hungry for knowledge.

Some basic things you should know before applying:

  • Those applying to be in the program should be between the ages of 16-22.
  • The project is only available for youth living in the Toronto area.
  • We require at LEAST 7 hours of your time every week for the six months you are in the program. If it doesn't look like you'll be able to commit to that, apply in a future round when you will.
  • You get what you put into yourself. Meaning, the more effort you put in to complete your plans, the more staff rally around you to make sure you succeed. There's nothing more disappointing than providing the resources to someone who doesn't make the effort.
  • One application equals one person. Crews need not apply, or at least should do so individually. Most of what we provide is on a one-on-one basis, and bringing your team into the mix means there's less time that we get to spend developing YOU.
  • If you're in high-school and taking co-op, consider asking your teacher to set you up with us as your placement. One of goals is to help you get your education, and if you can get credit for developing your skills here, we're happy to help make that happen.

Get at us for application forms and more info. getatremix@gmail.com and 416.534.5206 are the best ways to reach us. And get at us soon. The deadline for applications to the next round is December 18th.

How The Program Works

1) Filling out an application form and selecting a program stream based on what area you'd like to work in.

2) Meeting with program staff to identify your goals and working out a plan of action for the next six months.

3) Coming into the Remix Offices at least once a week to get work done, record a session, develop plans, meet with staff and business partners, etc. WE ARE NOT A DROP-IN! Lounging around does not make any money. If you don't grind, you don't shine.

Mentorship.

For those that need more specialized support, we also connect participants to mentors with professional experience that matches their field of interest. So if running clothing line is what you're doing, you'll get a mentor thats been doing the same thing. If designing websites is what you're into, you'll get a mentor that does the same thing. Capiche?

Internship.

In order to gain more hands-on experience within your given industry or field, internships at various companies can be made available, whenever they are available. These often go to participants that prove themselves reliable and able to carry themselves in a professional manner. Some are paid, others are not. It all depends on the company.

Other Opportunities.

  • We've successfully supported participants in going after grants and are still developing a micro-credit loan component.

  • Workshops with heavy hitters from the industry. Farley Flex (w/ VideoFact), Christian Pearce (of Pound Magazine), DJ Reflexxx (of LA's Power 106), are just some of the people we've had come through, sharing their experiences and giving insider tips on gaining the edge this competitive industry.

  • Networking opportunities are the most common benefit our participants receive. Whether its reaching out to other participants to do business, or securing clientele that come through looking to hire people for various projects, just being in the program for six months provides those kind of breaks.

Support for the Project

Mayor David Miller's Community Safety Panel, chaired by former Chief Justice Roy McMurtry named Remix a Priority Project in 2004.

Since then, the project has secured over 600,000 in funding from various government and private sources, which are:

Canadian Heritage, National Crime Prevention Centre, The Trillium Foundation, The City of Toronto, The United Way of Greater Toronto, Hunters Foundation, The Laidlaw Foundation, Flow 93.5, and IBM Canada.

In addition to these resources, The Remix Project benefits by various forms of in-kind support, from the following organizations:

  • LAMP Community Health Centre, which provides administrative support as a charitable trustee.

  • Agora Foundation, which provides organization development and capacity support

  • Humber College's Media Arts Program, providing three scholarships per year to Remix participants

  • Schools Without Borders, which supports international youth exchanges and other resources.

Spreading the word!

We're always looking for opportunities to make presentations and let people know about us. If you have a group of youth that you think would like to hear more about us, get in touch with Kehinde, our Outreach Coordinator. We can come out to you, or you can arrange to bring down your people to check us out and see what's really good. Our facilities usually widen the eyes of even the hardest of skeptics in the Screwface Capital (aka Toronto).

Some people think that we're rolling around in dough, and don't require any more support. Don't be silly. Remix is a non-profit, which means we're constantly juggling the demands of delivering a quality program to as many people as possible while keeping the bills paid. One day someday we'll lock down a partnership with the Canadian Mint and start printing our own money. Until then, we appreciate donations from those who believe in our work. We can offer a charitable receipt for any donation over $10. Just get at Derek, our Resource Coordinator drexinkredible@hotmail.com to set something up or for more information. If money wasn't something you had in mind, volunteers are needed from time to time to support our work too. Get at him.
